Durban is a rare 100% pure sativa from CRAFT Collective, a delivery service providing organic, Clean Green certified cannabis throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. (CRAFT was also kind enough to include some top-quality kief and a delicious, staggeringly potent lollipop as a generous bonus gift.)
Durban is a landrace strain that originated in South Africa and has been popularly known as Durban Poison since the 1970s. Favored by breeders for its soaring sativa effect, high THC content, and early flowering time, Durban Poison is a parent of many beloved hybrids, including Girl Scout Cookies and Cherry Pie.
Durban’s distinctive aroma is intensely pungent, almost overwhelming. Lemon, anise or fennel, pine, and fuel combine with subtler notes of damp soil, floral perfume, spicy oregano, menthol, and overripe fruit for an aggressive bouquet that is sour, spicy, sweet, and earthy, all at once. One good whiff is enough to get your eyes watering and nose hairs tingling.
These buds are nicely formed, dense but springy, coated with sparkly white trichomes and orange hairs, and extremely sticky.
The flavor is quite mild relative to the zingy, zesty aroma, with only a hint of the herbal spice and sickly sweet perfume coming through. There is a prominent black pepper taste, along with a bit of anise and fuel in the sweetly creamy smoke, with a slightly minty menthol aftertaste.
Durban Poison’s singular effect can be felt almost instantly, whooshing you out of your prior headspace with the first exhalation. Initially, this strain is so potent that the most miniscule dose is sufficient to bestow a powerful lifting sensation and numbing cerebral rush. It’s a clear, sweeping, energetic high; not too speedy, but somewhat dizzying and scattered. Durban’s effect is multidimensional, taking on different characteristics depending on your mood and physical state. It’s creative and whimsical, good for socializing and outdoor recreation, but forgetful and unfocused. At higher doses it can feel stupefying or jittery, or, somehow, both at once, and although its effect is generally upbeat, it can become quite dreamy and incapacitating if you overmedicate with Durban Poison. There’s little to no physical effect, although it may help with minor stomach pain and nausea. Durban is an ideal daytime strain for any experienced cannabis consumers who want their minds blown and their worries evaporated.
